CATHOLIC CHARITIES, DIOCESE OF JOLIET COMMITS TO JUSTICE ON WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY (WEAAD) THIS JUNE 15TH
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is a call to action to educate and raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders and ensure justice for all. According to the Administration for Community Living, “Every year an estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10 older Americans experience elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation.” Furthermore, the Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) reported a record number of elder abuse reports in 2019. In 2019, IDoA received 21,348 reports of abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and financial exploitation which was an increase of 4,841 reports from 2018.
Our community can work to prevent elder abuse by establishing services, connecting individuals with community resources, and educating individuals on the needs of the aging population. Services that have proven to help prevent elder abuse include:
- Money Management Services,
- Homemaker Services,
- Senior Companionship Programs,
- Telephone Reassurance,
- Nutrition Programs, and
- Interactive Programs, such as crafting, balance classes, and support groups.
